Nearly 250,000 seasonal jobs being offered by retailer, shipping giant
VIRGINIA – With the summer season slowly fading into the background as all things pumpkin spice and even Christmas related begin to dot store shelves, businesses are ramping up their hiring efforts ahead of what is expected to be a busy holiday season with both UPS and Target set to hire a combined near quarter-million workers.
Last week, both the retailer and shipping giant announced their plans to hire a combined 230,000 workers for the coming holiday season in an effort to support the respective companies’ efforts to deliver a quality shopping and shipping experience to their customers during their busiest time of year.
According to officials at UPS, the roughly 100,000 seasonal employees they plan on hiring will aid in supporting increased package volume set to begin in November and continue through January 2020.
“We expect another record peak season this year, with daily package deliveries nearly doubling compared to our average of 20 million per day,” said Jim Barber, chief operating officer. “In order to make that happen, once again we’re recruiting about 100,000 people for some of the country’s best seasonal jobs.”
Many of the full- and part-time positions with UPS will focus primarily on package handlers, drivers, and driver-helpers and, according to the company, the seasonal jobs have been a key entry point for those employees to find permanent employment at UPS, noting many of their senior executives, including Chairman and CEO David Abney and other members of the company’s senior leadership team, started their UPS careers as part-time employees.

“Over the last three years, 35 percent of the people UPS hired for seasonal package handler jobs were later hired in a permanent position when the holidays are over, and nearly a third of our current U.S. workforce started in seasonal positions,” the company detailed, citing a TRUE Global Intelligence online survey of 1,000 past, present, and potential American seasonal workers that found “Nearly 70 percent want their seasonal job to turn into a full-time position, according to a recent survey of Americans who hold, have held or would consider taking a seasonal job. And nearly all – 90 percent – agreed that seasonal and temporary jobs are a good way to move into a permanent, full-time career.”
In addition, eligible seasonal employees who are students may be able to earn up to $1,300 toward their college expenses as part of UPS’ Earn and Learn program, “in addition to their hourly pay, for three months of continuous employment.”
UPS operates a distribution center just north of Chester off Willis Road in Chesterfield County, along with a number of UPS Store locations, which specialize in shipping, packing, and business services.
Along with UPS, Target also announced last week they plan to bring on over 130,000 seasonal team members to support their stores across the United States as they prepare for increased foot traffic in their brick-and-mortar locations and increased shipping at their distribution centers.
In a statement, the company explained, of the seasonal hires, the vast majority – approximately 125,000 positions – will be in stores, while the remaining 8,000 will be employed at Target’s distribution and fulfillment centers.
“It’s critical we build the right team across our stores and supply chain to deliver an exceptional holiday experience for our guests during the busiest time of the year,” said Melissa Kremer, chief human resources officer at Target. “From engaging our current team members who are interested in extra hours, to adding more than 130,000 seasonal hires, we continue to invest in our team because they make it easier and more joyful to shop at Target, especially during the holidays.”
Along with bringing on seasonal hires, the company added that they are “committed to offering existing team members additional hours based on their preference and availability.”

Those joining Target’s team will receive a minimum starting wage of $13 an hour, this coming after the retailer raised its minimum wage in June, with the goal of reaching $15 an hour as a minimum hourly wage by the end of 2020.
This year’s planned hiring by Target surpasses their efforts last year when they brought on 127,500 workers to serve roles in their stores and warehouses. According to the company, “more than 40 percent of those seasonal hires remained with Target following the holiday season.”

Target, the eighth largest retailer in terms of sales in 2018, operates a pair of stores in and around Southside Virginia, one in Colonial Heights at its longtime home in the Dimmock Square shopping center near Southpark Mall and a second store along Jefferson Davis Highway near John Tyler Community College and the intersection of U.S. Route 1 and Route 10.

According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, retail employment traditionally peaks in the months leading up to the Christmas shopping season while significantly declining in January and February, such as in 2016, retail employment peaked at 16.3 million in December of that year before dropping to 15.4 million in February of 2017.
