The 63rd Annual Grandfather Mountain Highland Games took place July 12 through July 13 this year in MacRae Meadows, NC.

The Scottish-inspired gathering packs piles of fun into a weekend, from sheepdog demonstrations to Celtic Rock concerts. There is no end of food either – Shepherd’s Pie, sausage rolls, and some homemade ice cream to top it all off.

The annual event also serves as a “gathering of the Scottish Clans,” and with over 150 clans, you just might find yours. Clans are formed to give members a shared sense of of identity and belonging. Most Scottish clans date to the 19th century, with members incorporating kilts into their clothing.

Next year’s games, the 64th Annual, will take place from July 11 to July 14 – a Thursday through Sunday. Kilts are not required, but you certainly wouldn’t feel out of place.
