VIRGINIA – Tiffany Jones-Fouts, a Registered Nurse at Southside Regional Medical Center (SRMC), has received the prestigious Daisy Award, for her professionalism, keen attention to detail, and compassion for patients under her care. She is employed as a Labor and Delivery (L&D) Nurse at SRMC.
While Jones-Fouts was treating a new mother and newborn, she noticed something when adjusting the patient’s clothing. One of the patient’s breasts was bandaged. The patient assured her that the breast “was just infected.” Jones-Fouts examined the so-called “infection,” and knew immediately that this was much more. This was a crucial pick-up that could have gone unnoticed. This would later be diagnosed as a life-threatening illness. With a sinking feeling in her heart, Jones-Fouts placed the tiny newborn baby on the mother’s chest and felt so helpless about her suspicion.
This special patient was later diagnosed with breast cancer, and would have to undergo surgery and treatment, that would prolong the time she would have with her husband and new baby. Jones-Fouts went well beyond the scope and responsibilities of her duties because she was moved to do what she could for this small family.
Jones-Fouts, along with the help of her fellow staff members, collected a basket of thoughtful gifts. There was a recordable book that the mother could use to read to her child, and the child will be able to listen to the book, that was recorded in the mother’s own voice, for many years to come. There was a book of devotionals for those quiet moments of reflection. There was also a gift certificate for a photography session to preserve what will one day be a sweet memory for the family. A gift card was also included to help out with expenses while the young Mother is receiving treatments.
“This nurse represents all that is good in nursing,” said Shirley Woodlief, Labor and Delivery Manager. “She is a seasoned L&D nurse, with a gentle and kind heart for her patients. Her skills and compassion combine to make the very best bedside nurse. I’ve seen this nurse hold hands, wipe brows, talk softly, and deliver babies. Her caring is evident every day she spends in L&D.”
The prestigious Daisy award was presented to Jones-Fouts on August 20, 2018, by L&D Nurse Manager, Shirley Woodlief, in recognition of her exemplary patient care. Many in the room were moved to tears as Woodlief read Jones-Fouts’ award, alongside their fellow L&D colleagues and staff.
“I am proud to be a Labor and Delivery Nurse,” said Jones-Fouts. “It truly is my passion. To be able to educate, coach, and take care of a mother as she brings her baby into the world is a Blessing. With all of that being said, I was completely shocked, but truly honored to have been presented with The Daisy Award today. I really can’t express my gratitude enough. Also, I must say that this award is truly for EVERYONE who came together to help me Bless a very sweet patient, that really touched my heart. I never wanted recognition for that; however, the girls I work with–my Labor and Delivery Family, an awesome OB doctor, the Nursery girls, and the Post-Partum girls; we all came together in helping this new Mother. Some of these wonderful people had never even met the Mother. All of them deserve this award right along with me. I am really humbled by this recognition and opportunity, and I cannot thank you all enough.”
