PRINCE GEORGE – Early Thursday morning, members of the Prince George Police Department responded to the 2200 block of Butler Branch Road to execute a search warrant related to a criminal investigation.
Upon officers entering the residence, an individual presented himself holding two firearms. Officers retreated away from the immediate vicinity of the armed subject. While still present inside of the dwelling, officers began communicating with the individual. As this incident quickly evolved into a barricaded situation, assistance was requested from the Virginia State Police.
Approximately three and a half hours from the initial encounter, and with the assistance of the Virginia State Police, an officer was able to deploy a Taser, striking the individual. Upon being struck by the Taser probes, the subject discharged one shot from a handgun he was holding. He was taken into custody without further incident; no injuries were reported.
Neighboring residents were notified by supporting officers regarding safety precautions, and social media notifications were sent out to residents, for their safety, advising of the active situation and asking that they remain indoors and avoid the area.
In a later statement, officials with the police department said the search warrant was related to a child pornography investigation and identified the man as 47-year-old Terry Brentlinger.
According to authorities, Brentlinger has been charged with one count of attempted malicious bodily injury to law-enforcement, discharging a weapon into a dwelling, and reckless handling of a firearm. He is currently being held at Riverside Regional Jail without bond.
Regarding the child pornography investigation, the department said detectives are in the process of reviewing evidence recovered from the home and that their investigation continues.
