PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George County Police are investigating a shooting involving a suspect wanted on child pornography charges where the suspect shot himself with a firearm he was possessing.

According to a statement from the department Thursday afternoon, just after noon, officers were called to the 3800 block of Puddledock Road in an attempt to locate a suspect wanted on an indictment related to the production of child pornography.

When the officer arrived, they observed the suspect, who remains unidentified, standing outside of his residence.

“As the officer began a dialogue with him, the suspect retrieved a handgun from his clothing,” Officer Alexis Grochmal said. “As the suspect turned away from the officer, gunfire was heard. The officer subsequently discovered the suspect lying on the ground with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.”

“The involved officer did not discharge his service weapon,” Grochmal continued.

The unidentified suspect was taken to the Tri-Cities ER where his condition is unknown.

The investigation into Thursday’s shooting remains ongoing.
